San Diego. Drink It In. It Always Goes Down Smooth.

Earlier this month my parents stopped in for a visit for my birthday. This is the third time they’ve visited me out in L.A. and it’s hard to keep finding interesting things in L.A. to do with them. So this time we decided to venture out and down to San Diego. I was really excited to go to SD since I had yet to be there. We planned our day and the places we wanted to see.

Our first stop was an adorable winery called Bernardo Winery. We’re all wineheads so this was perfect. It didn’t matter that it was 10am when we got there. The place is set up like a little town almost. It’s also set off this relatively main road and you drive through a neighborhood to get there. There’s a bunch of little shops and cafe’s around that you can pop in. Everyone there was incredibly friendly too. We then decided it was 11am and that was late enough to start tasting some wine. I was introduced to a Syrah that was delicious. I had never had Syrah before this and I quickly became a fan. The great part about this winery is you can take your glass with you and wander off from the tasting room to explore some more. I’d definitely recommend this winery if you’re ever around the SD area. It’s about 20 minutes from the main part of SD but well worth it.

Our next stop was the famous Balboa Park. I mean, this is all I hear about when I hear about San Diego. It was gorgeous to say the least and chock full of things to walk around and see. The Zoo is right there but we didn’t venture there this time. The place is full of museums too that I don’t think are that expensive we just weren’t feeling on the museums that day. However, there is a great Botanical Garden there that we enjoyed and it’s free!

From Balboa Park we went over to Point Loma. A friend of Andy’s had said that we should stop there. We ended up at a military base and somewhat lost only to find out we were right down the road from it. It’s $5/car to get in and it’s this amazing view of SD and the ocean. There’s also this lighthouse that some people used to live in that you can walk up into. The rooms in it were surprisingly spacious.

After Point Loma, we were all getting a little hungry so we decided to head down to the Gaslamp District for some grub. This was probably the worst part of the trip for me. I was expecting something else out of the Gaslamp. Not exactly sure what but something and all I got was a million happy hours and a bunch of frat kids. Pretty uneventful I’d say.

We were about to head back to LA when Andy heard that there were free tickets and drinks waiting for us at this comedy club not far from where we were. We made the decision to stay out in SD for the show and I’m pretty glad we did. We went to the Comedy Palace and saw I want to say 5 comedians of all different styles. The headliner was Jay Phillips. He was in Semi-Pro and Baby Momma both of which I haven’t seen but he did look familiar and his stand up was pretty excellent. We enjoyed a free round of drinks and some delicious desserts. You’re able to order dinner as well which we opted out of.

I enjoyed SD because I was with my parents and my boyfriend. Although the city as a whole isn’t very exciting. I think I was expecting more but it was a wonderful day trip and I will definitely go back to go to the Zoo. I should also probably stop comparing everything to San Francisco but I just love that city so much!

And now some parting words from Ron Burgundy:

Basically, the last two years have been full of amazing opportunites, fantastic people, and GOOD TIMES.  I can’t imagine being anywhere else right now.  So, live your dreams people.  Go out and do new things.  Don’t be afraid of failing because there are a million people that don’t even TRY to do anything new.  And believe me, if I haven’t failed yet (and I use “yet” loosely) you FOR SURE won’t!

LUV,

Britt
