Oh Hey, I Produced That!

It’s Friday and I just got back from vacation, so that means I’m entitled to toot my own horn a little, right?  SURE!  Here is a little short film I helped produce and that Miss Jess set designed.  Hope this gets you through those final few hours of work.  Enjoy your weekend!  And don’t forget to check out the Broke Girls Guide Weekender for some hot tips on all things free, cheap, and fun in LA ;-)

Burger Club LA

Burgers, CHECK.  LA, CHECK.  Friends, CHECK.

Thanks to a good friend, Burger Club LA is in full effect.  What is Burger Club you may ask?  Well, it is JUST THAT.  A club revolving around burgers.

Picture this, you and a few (10+) of your closest friends (anyone who wants to join and eat burgers) enjoying tasty burgers once a month, from all over LA.

There are some rules for the Burger Club, but really, what are a few rules when happiness soon follows.   Every member must give a speech on why they love the burger at their first Burger Club meeting…All members must attend Burger Club meetings. Not attending Burger Club meetings can be grounds for dismissal from the club… and we must not forget, All Burger Club members must devote themselves to the burger, showing the burger love at all times.

The first Burger Club LA meeting was held at  STOUT.

Located at: 1544 N. Cahuenga Blvd.                                                                                                                       Los Angeles, CA.  90028

Our first meeting brought in 12 guests.  Each explaining why we love burgers, ‘meat and cheese, what’s not to love…I’m iron deficient so I need red meat once a month…I’m AMERICAN.’

Shu Burger

Stout Burger

our president

At the end of our meal, the rating system begins.  Keeping everything into account, from beer pairings, actual burger, ambience, service, everything.  A meal is part food/taste and part experience.

Our overall STOUT experience 3.47/5

This being the first of many meetings, we couldn’t have kicked it off any  better.  I look forward to many more juicy, meaty, savory, and delicious  meals with the BCL crew.

Eat, Drink, and be Scary

This past weekend the Shoaks Crew and Friends got together to kick off the Halloween season right.  We made spooky snacks and appetizers, watched our good friend Zak’s HALLOWEEN POWER HOUR, and set off for Universal Halloween Horror Nights.

EYE've been Stabbed

RIP

Mummy Pizza

Prior to heading out, we were packing.  And I’m not talking about packing an over night bag.  I’m talking about ShotPaks .  Packets of liquor, vodka, rum, tequila, and lemon drop.  ”You packin?”

These little packets of happiness really made our night.  Of course, in addition to the spooktacular horror nights events.

Since we had each gotten the front of the line passes (only way to go) we were able to go on everything!  You can tell those waiting in an 1hr+ lines hated us, but you know what?  No one hated Einstein for being smart!!

Favorite ride of the evening?  THE MUMMY!

Favorite haunted house of the evening? Rob Zombie’s House of a 1000 Corpses.

So, in a recap, did we have fun? YES.  Were we scared to death? Veronica and I were, YES.  Were we packin’? OHHHH YEA.  Was this the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season? You BOOtter believe it ;)

Royal Harvest Flax Oil!

The LAQP’s were recently contacted by a company called Royal Harvest that produces Flax Oil and Flax Meal in all different kinds of delicious flavors. They are a new line of flax products that are all natural and a good source of Omega-3.

They found us and our recipes and wanted us to use their product in some of our recipes and were going to send us some samples. Super exciting, right? Well, the package arrived last Friday and I was blown away. They sent us full bottles of every oil they have an two big bags of their flax meal! Not at all what I was expecting but incredibly grateful for their generosity.

You can check out Royal Harvest at:

http://www.royalharvestflax.com

The website isn’t quite finished but it gives you a list of where you can purchase the products. They’re sold at most Whole Foods as well as health stores on-line.

I was so excited I had to cook something with one of the oils right away so expect that post later this week.

Thanks Royal Harvest!

“I’m gonna live till I die!”

Frank Sinatra said that. Ya know what else Frank said…? “Palm Springs is the best part about living in LA!”  Okay, he didn’t really say that, I did, but Frank did love himself some Palm Springs pool loungin’ and mid day martini drinkin’! Durning a recent mini vaycay with my BF and another couple, we discovered just how amazing the desert outside LA can be. And the best part of staying in Palm Springs, is doing it at a discount. Thanks Living Social for our beautiful stay at the Belle Monte Hot Springs Resort and Spa where we did nothing but relax and stare at the gorgeous view from lounge chairs next to the pool while sipping our complimentary champagne. The next day got even better when we stayed at the Parker Palm Springs hotel, where we took full advantage of 2 pools, amazing freshly muddled mojitos, clay tennis courts and a complimentary yoga class! Check out our pretty pretty vaycay pics!

You know what these windmills mean…. We’re getting close…

The view from the Belle Monte Resort’s pool.

Oysters in the Desert!? Delicious! At Casa Blanca in Desert Hot Springs (known for their seafood… REALLY!)

Roasting marshmallows in the fire-pit at Belle Monte

YUMMMM

Dutch Baby is what this local Palm Springs restaurant is known for! So YUM

(Elmers, Palm Springs)

The gorgeous retro pool at The Parker

Loungin…

I WON!!! Spa Casino made our trip complete!

Don’t forget to hit up the outlet malls at Desert Hills Premium Outlets on your way back and blow all that money you won at the casino! I’ll leave you all with one last thing, “Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy” — Frank Sinatra

Sushi & Sweets

This will actually be my last official “weekend” for a bit. I wrapped on my gig Tuesday and am on to the next thing! Whatever/whenever that may be. Oh, the joys for the freelance world :-) So for now, enjoy some the places I enjoyed this last weekend!

Midori Sushi
13905 Ventura Blvd
Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
(818) 789-1188

Cheap and delicious sushi. $25 all you can eat. Enough to get you in the door?

Crumbs Bake Shop
779 Americana Way
Glendale, CA 91210
(818) 502-0050

I’m weird. I don’t really like cake, but cupcakes are my FAVORITE. There’s just something about those little guys I can’t get enough of! And have you noticed cupcake icing is always better then cake icing? Just me? Ok… But Crumbs cupcakes in the Americana always soothes my cravings.

Red Velvet and Cookies n' Cream. Mouth watering yet?

Sweetsalt
10218 1/2 Riverside Dr
Los Angeles, CA 91602
(818) 509-7790

All (yes, ALL) the LAQP’s had a meeting at Sweetsalt on Sunday afternoon. Lobster rolls, quinoa, and fresh baked desserts were consumed. I seemed to have QUITE the sweet tooth this weekend…

Stay tuned for next week’s “non-weekend” blog!

Gimme some of dat ahhhh scream….

Any time I’m in, around, near, think of the word Westwood, I go into fight or flight mode.   Is Westwood dangerous!?? Only if you’re a USC fan… ima right?  Anyways, no, the only dangerous thing about Westwood is Diddy Reese and it is ONLY dangerous to your waist line.

We’ve all heard it before, I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream sandwiches.  Oh.  That’s not how the rhyme goes?  Well it should, because since the very first day I stepped foot into Diddy Reese, I have been screaming to go back.   OK, ok, so I haven’t been SCREAMING…but def craving.  And for only a $1.50, it’s really hard to say no.  Truly an internal fight every time I go over the 405.

Located in the heart of Westwood and right around the corner from UCLA (sorry USC fans, but you gotta give it up for UCLA having a too good for words ice cream shop).

The whole Diddy Reese experience can be a new experience every time.  Or… it can be the same every time, it’s really your cup of milk.  Get it? Tea wouldn’t fit with the whole cookies theme…(crickets)…back to Diddy Reese.   They make their own cookies, ranging from flavors like Choc. Chip with Walnuts, Oatmeal Raisin, Sugar, White Choc. Chip, etc .  Truly a cookie emporium.

If you like to live life on the edge, the cookie edge, then mix it up! My latest mixture was the following cookies: Choc Chip w/ Walnuts and Cinnamon Sugar, Ice cream: Choc Chip Cookie Dough.

Final thoughts?

Delicious.

Diddy Reese, you just can’t fight with ice cream sandwiches, you just can’t.

mel

So umm, What’s Your Number?

“20 isn’t even high at all…”

Last night I attended  the premier of the new Anna Faris and Chris Evans movie, What’s Your Number?  But I attended it in a way that I CAN ONLY HOPE to attend more movie premiers like: as press.  That’s right, interviewing on the red carpet. (excuse me while I pick up my jaw from the floor)  I personally didn’t do the interviewing, but my questions were asked, I “operated” the camera, and I got inspired to do more of this stuff.

…a moment for a quick vocab lesson….

This Stuff:  (n) my dream.

…you may now continue to read as planned….

The premier was held at the Regency Village Theater in Westwood.  ( yup! right across the street from Diddy Reese.  Look for my D.R. post later this week)  My red carpet bud, Amy, was sent to do some interviews for the AMAZING website BrokeGirlsGuide.  She needed some extra help and Brandon sent her my way. Badda Bing Badda Boom…. interviewing on the red carpet!!!

with the press

waiting for the celebs

The beautiful Tika Sumpter

my partner in crime, Amy

Afterwards we grabbed our popcorn, diet cokes, and enjoyed the movie.  Which is absolutely adorable, and the perfect way to end a Monday.  I can only imagine what the rest of the week will bring!
