You Try Coming: Britt and Jess’ Sunday Shenanigans!

A Sunday off? It’s nearly unheard of in our lives these days but we had been planning and looking forward to this one for awhile now.

We decided to buy massages for our birthday presents to each other and we were going to do it on the 25th. A friend of the QueenPins, Alyssa, told us about a place in Pasadena called Heart & Sole and it’s $25/hr massage. We made 3:00 appointments and planned on going to one of my favorite restaurants in L.A. – Pure Luck.

1:30 rolls around and I get the devastating news that Pure Luck is closed on Sunday! TRAGIC! Literally, world shattering news. At least we still had the massages to look forward to. We set out at 2:30pm, giving ourselves a half hour to get to Pasadena, which is really only a 15 minute drive.

Who knows what happened. When you get down to it – it was Britt and I in a car trying to get somewhere…that’s what happened. It quickly turned into Jess getting frustrated that the GPS was giving wrong directions and Brittany dropping swears left and right. We parked in some random garage and found out it wasn’t where we were supposed to be. We went around in circles for 10 minutes because, little known fact, Pasadena has TONS of one-way streets. Brittany called just to tell them we were going to be late and all she got was, “You try coming…”! Of course we’re trying! We swoop into a rockstar parking space, but it’s metered! And it doesn’t exclude Sundays! Seriously?! And all we have in our wallets are pennies. I dig around in my car for a second and somehow we scrounge up enough money to feed that baby enough for an hour an a half. We were only 15 minutes late…but it is L.A., right?

Heart and Sole is a cute little place. The lights are low and soothing music and those rock fountain things are all around. The way this place works is there’s a row of about 6 massage chairs and they do massages in groups. So, you’re not alone while getting a massage. But no worries, you keep your clothes on! And are covered with a towel. Starting off laying on your back, they massage your face, head, neck, shoulders and then move onto the feet. Brittany and I both have an intense reaction to our feet being touched and this was no different. We both had our hands under the towels and pinched ourselves the whole time they were working our feet to refrain from an outburst! I think the people massaging us thought this was funny or something because every time I opened my eyes they were smiling pretty big smiles.

The best part for me was when we turned over and they did our back. I had never had a professional massage and with the amount of stress I’ve been under lately, this was the best thing for me. I was completely relaxed after he got all the knots out of my shoulders and released tons of tension.

It’s worth $25 for the hour and it feels like you’re in there for 20 minutes, it goes by super fast! Plus, you’ll have someone going to town on your butt for a few minutes and who can resist that?!

An inside view of Heart and Sole (borrowed from Yelp!)

Since Pure Luck was closed we settled on what we figured was the next best thing – The Brite Spot! Brite spot is a kitchy little diner in the Echo Park area. If you’ve seen Food Inc, it’s featured at the beginning with the cutest old lady I’ve ever met. The service is always great and it’s a friendly place to chat and enjoy a nice meal. We were far too hungry to snap pictures of our meals. However, I had the Vegetarian Cibatta sandwich and Brittany had the Turkey Pesto. They were both magnificent as always. We splurged on a cupcake for dessert. It was a toss-up between a peanut butter cupcake and red velvet. After consulting our waitress she suggested the Red Velvet and we dug right in and were not at all disappointed!

Pretty giant Red Velvet Cupcake w/ AMAZING frosting!

The Brite Spot is a great place to go for any meal and has tons of vegetarian options, which is always a plus for me.

Yogaling and Excercizen

I can’t believe we haven’t put up a blog about this yet!  As most of you know, those dreaded summer months are coming.  And I say dreaded because it’s always hot in LA, but now come those months you are expected to actually go out in a bathing suit.  If you’re looking for a great excersise or yoga class, check out some of our favorites!

The Rising Lotus - This is a fave of Margo’s.  She says “Def check out Rising Lotus because it’s clean and calm, but you will definitely sweat if you take a mixed level or level 2 class.  I always leave feeling centered and the teachers are super nice and always helpful – one of the best studios I’ve ever been to!”

InYoga Center – Margo just went to a class here the other night!  She enjoyed the teacher and the class and is planning to come back for another class soon! And she said the studio is quite estetically pleasing: GORGEOUS and huge and includes Mens/Womens changing rooms and bathrooms with showers!  And the months of April – June allow new students to take their first class free with a donation to “LA’s Best,” which benefits after-school programs at local public elementary schools.  Yoga and a good cause?  Count us in!

Yoga Shelter – I’ve heard great things about this place (I’m not going to lie to our trusting readers, I’ve never done yoga, so I don’t know?) but the first week for new members is FREE and unlimited.  And they have a fantastic package for 60 days unlimited for $99.  Sounds pretty tight to me!

Piloxing – I may not be into yoga, but I’m for sure in to exercise classes and my fave by far in LA is Viveca Jensen’s Piloxing classes.  This is an all female class that’s a mix of boxing (you wear weighted gloves and do the boxing moves) and pilates (at the end of the class, you grab a mat and strech and cool down.)  Viveca is amazing and so full of energy.

Cardio Barre – We haven’t tried this class yet, but it’s on our list!  I used to be a dancer for many years, and I feel I will fall in love with the ballet portion of the class.  If you get to it before us, please send us some feedback!

El Cholo – An L.A. Staple

Sitting down to write a blog about El Cholo is like sitting down to write a blog about — well anything else that’s hard to write about. There’s so many good things about El Cholo, it’s hard to focus and pen coherent thoughts instead of writing Mmmmm Yum…Mmmmmm….Oooooh Yeah! But I’ll give it the old college try! To start off with, Mexican has taken over my palate recently and become my favorite dining out option. How can one argue over free chips and salsa every time?! But I digress…

I heard about El Cholo through Brittany and our other roommate Christine. They absolutely raved about this place. A few months back Andrew and I had a date night and went there. We were blown away! Absolutely delicious and the staff was so friendly and wear the cutest outfits.

So when he asked where I wanted to go for my birthday it was a toss up. El Cholo or Pure Luck. Pure Luck lost of course but there will be a great blog about that coming soon! I couldn’t wait to go back to this place. This time around I think it took us longer to decide what we wanted than actually get our food. The service was incredible and so quick. We ordered some chips and guac to start and it was handmade to our perfection in front of us.

Makes ya wanna say, MmMmMm!

I ordered the cheese quesdailla (which was the same thing I had last time), it held up and it was just as delicious.

Andrew had the chicken tostadita, it was also very very good. I pushed away from chicken and ate some of the amazing veggies that were inside.

We stuffed ourselves to the brims and rolled ourselves out of there.

Not only is the menu amazing but the margarita menu is also quite good. I’ve only had the Pomegranate Margarita but I would have it again and again.

So, if you’re looking for Mexican dishes with some L.A. History behind it, look no further than El Cholo. They have locations in Santa Monica and the original is in Los Angeles on Western, plus a few in the surrounding LA counties.

Mel the Mexican War Lord

Once upon a time, Margo moved into a castle with Mel.  Unfortunately, the inhabitants before Margo left an Old Magical Organ that Mel and Margo did not want to play, for it had been said that playing the Organ would lead to infertility.  Also, they could not afford lessons.  They told the old inhabitants over and over to get rid of the Old Magical Organ, but they refused.  Then began an e-mail chain that went on and on for many moons about the Old Magical Organ being removed from the castle.  Finally, it was said that if the Old Magical Organ was not moved, Mel the Mexican War Lord would get them!  This frightened the old inhabitants, so the Old Magical Organ was finally removed from the castle and now all live happily ever after!  But keep in mind kiddies, we all know that “Mel the Mexican War Lord” truly exist.  So make sure to never mess with her, because she will fuck you up.  THE END.

BABE Lincoln Be Hotter Than ABE Lincoln

I dedicate this post to the LA Queen Pins dear friend Brandon Dermer and his newest music venture, Babe Lincoln!

Brandon Dermer: Beat Master

Brandon has played in bands all of his life and has now set out to explore his most recent music project, Babe LincolnBabe Lincoln’s beats consist of high energy electronica party jams that are HIGHLY influenced by 80′s pop culture.  The debut album 8086 is set to come out this summer and I speak for all the LA Queen Pins when I say “WE CAN’T WAIT!”  Brandon will be collaborating with a bunch of different musicians, including his good friend Jon LaJoie who will be helping him mix and master the EP.

I have to say that one my fondest memories I have of Brandon and his beats are back when Mel and I visited him in NYC last summer.  Brandon was working on the film Remember Me and living in Brooklyn.  It was approximately 800 degrees in his apartment (this may be an exaggeration, but it was effing HOT!)  and we sat in his room, windows open, his electric guitar plugged in, and he jammed for me, Mel and the rest of Brooklyn.  It was epic.

And take it from the beat master himself: “Babe Lincoln is there for you when you’re ready to party, when your heart is broken, and when you’re high on life.”   No one could say it better.

Please check out Babe Lincoln’s official website at: www.babelincolnbeats.com

And on a side note, our very own Queen Pin, Miss Margo Murphy, was the photographer and designer of Babe Lincoln’s album cover for 8086.  As always, we are so proud!

Brillz, right?!  Oh, and wondering who the hottie Babe Lincoln gal is?  That’s another one of our good friends Ms. Meghan Mathes.  She is part of Little Spoon Productions.  Check out some of their work on their YouTube Channel:

Our Day Had 6 Flags…As Opposed To The Normal 5

We really do hate to brag (well…kind of), but once again our boyfriends amazed us with another birthday surprise. Apparently, I had been talking about wanting to go to Magic Mountain again for awhile. Bryan and Andy came up with a plan to surprise us again on the 18th. Only giving us select clues – what to wear, etc.- and that was it. The funny thing is Britt and I both guessed what it was before and they straight up LIED to us about it. Those silly boys! Anyways, they surprised us with season passes to Six Flags Magic Mountain! BIG FUN!

We set out early, leaving by 10 am and getting into the park at 11.

The first ride we conquered was GOLIATH! Which turned out to be everyone’s favorite but mine. Rollercoasters are a lot of fun but they still terrify me. Without having been on one since last summer I was pretty nervous. GOLIATH! was the first introduction to Andrew riding a roller coaster with me…and if you have ever ridden a roller coaster with me then you know what I mean. Normally I’m a shy girl upon meeting new people and it takes me awhile to open up. I have no idea where these screams come from…the deepest pit of my being I guess. It’s good to know if I ever get attacked I can at least muster up a hearty yell! The Goliath has a 255ft drop and is pretty great all around.

We then moved onto Batman and Riddler. Riddler being a not very fast coaster and a little disappointing on all ends. It was my first “stand up” coaster and at least I put that behind me. Terminator was fun, being the first wooden coaster we rode. It was being built when we ventured there last summer so it was good to take it for a test run.

Then there was Deja Vu. I really did NOT want to go on this ride. I was almost begging Andrew to not go on it. I just didn’t. For some reason it was making me nervous and I didn’t like that you kind of hang vertically at the top for a bit. It was stressing me out. I was getting stressed out about riding a rollercoaster! Anyways, we’re next in line and I’m telling him I don’t want to go and he’s giddy and telling me it’ll be fine. Andrew offered to just walk right through and not go on the ride. A man that LOVES coasters offering to not go on this ride with me because I was being a whiny baby. How sweet. I just couldn’t walk right through when we had waited a decent amount of time to ride.

We ride the ride. I don’t stop screaming or making noises the whole minute we’re on it. Everyone else is silenced as we hang at the top for split seconds before we drop again. Everyone is silenced but me. I am screaming bloody murder. Just screaming – for really no reason. And Andy is laughing. We pull back into the station and there’s mechanical issues. So we’re stuck in the harnesses. I just want to get off this ride. Haven’t I been through enough already? I went through a lot in that last minute of my life. It jerks forward and I whimper a little. The harnesses pop up and I scrambled to get out of the seat and find my shoes. The ride is down for a while leaving Britt and Bryan next in line. So they didn’t get a chance to ride it. Oh but don’t worry, we have season passes, remember?!

Next up, X2. This is the ride that Mel, Britt, our friend Eric and myself all cried on. No joke, tears were shed on this ride last year. Not only are there intense drops but the car you’re in spins as well. I didn’t cry this time but X2 is not for the faint of heart though, take my word for it. After the back to back duo of Deja Vu and X2 I was spent and needed a break.

What X2 looks like from a spectator’s view!

So we stopped for some food and took a leisurely ride on the carousel, ahh it was fabulous.

How sweet is that carousel?

Up next was Colossus. My personal favorite. It’s the wooden coaster featured in the intro to Step By Step. Remember that? This ride is so fun and I laughed the way through, which in turn made Andy laugh with me instead of at me. A ride that I didn’t sound like I was dying on? Perfection. The rest of the day we ended up riding this 3 times! On the third time something interesting happened. Andrew and I were in the second to last car and there were two men riding in the last car. Right at the top of the first big drop, spit flew out of my mouth and I looked at Andy and told him I had just spit and there was a string of spit across my cheek (don’t try it boys, this girl’s taken!). I started laughing about this and so did Andy. But Andy was laughing because he heard the guy behind us say, “I think I just swallowed a fly!”. Oh no sir, that was just my spit that flew out of my mouth and into yours! Talk about skills! From now on Colossus will be one of my favorite coasters! As an added bonus in October they run it backwards…CANNOT WAIT!

At the end of the exhausting but extremely fun day, we went to Mae Ploy in Los Angeles for some Thai grub. It’s your average Thai place. Pad Thai is average but still a good meal, for fairly cheap. It’s not my favorite Thai place in LA, but it’s a decent one if you’re on that side of town. Them having a cat picture gained them a few points!

Meows! at Mae Ploy

Mae Ploy

2606 West Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90026 - (213) 353-9635
Open Daily 10am-10pm

The Six Flags Season Pass is really a good deal. It’s the same price – $60 – as a general admission ticket into the park on a normal day. There’s of course the $30 online ticket but why not get a season pass and have yourself a six flags year?

Get yourself a season pass and you too can have BIG FUN!

Snuggles,

J and Britt
